Baseball Games

Baseball Mogul
The game of baseball is considered to be America’s favourite pastime although the NFL has more viewers per game. But baseball has more games so that makes baseball the winner. So it stands to reason that a computer baseball game would be one of the earliest video games made.

It was 1971 and BASBAL was created for the PDP-10 mainframe by a student programmer by the name of Don Daglow. And this momentous event took place at Pomona College. This computerized baseball game is now now enshrined and documented at the Baseball Hall of Fame.

The mathematical modelling used in the game was called sabermetric and it became the basis for almost three decades of baseball video games including World Series Baseball, Tony La Russa Baseball and the Earl Weaver Baseball games. In general, all video baseball games have an arcade type quality to them.

To give you an idea of the baseball video game popularity, there were over 12 games developed for the Nintendo Entertainment System between the years 1988 and 1991. Major League Baseball, Tecmo Baseball, Baseball Simulator, Bad News Baseball to name just a few of the popular titles.

And since the year 2000 until 2009, there have been over 50 baseball video game releases. Some have been the next in a series but there have been many that have been a new take of the game of baseball.

Each of them had in common, the crack of a bat, the swish of the batter fanning on a pitch and the roar of the crowd. Almost as good as being there live.
